5H40.30 Jumping Wire

A wire is placed between poles of a horseshoe magnet and connected to a battery. The wire jumps out of the magnet.

Setup Requirements: Assembled as needed. Needs special cart. Ask ahead of time. A power supply can be used if you want to show how force varies with current.  

 

Equations: Force proportional to I x L x B.

 

Safety Issues: If leave switch closed more than a few seconds the insulation will start smoking. For those who find this too exciting a resistor can be installed to reduce current.
